We all connect to music

Rhythm Within Us
Every aspect of our being—our heartbeat, breathing, tone of speech, and walking rhythm—exhibits a natural cadence and harmony. These intrinsic patterns create a profound connection to music, serving as the foundation for our musicality.
When we immerse ourselves in music, whether through listening or participating in musical activities, our brains spring into action. Cognitive functions are engaged, activating auditory regions that process language and sound, alongside motor areas that govern physical movement. This seamless interplay allows us to instinctively respond to musical rhythms, much like young children who cannot help but dance to the sounds of music.
It is clear that our musical abilities are not merely learned; they are innate gifts which we are born with.

Music and the Brain
Music has a profound ability to stimulate the emotional centers of our brains, guiding us through a spectrum of feelings and offering a powerful outlet for self-expression. It can soothe grief, stabilize emotions, and provide comfort in times of need. Moreover, music acts as a trigger for memories, helping us recall significant life experiences. The connection between music and humanity is deep and inseparable, reflecting our shared experiences and emotions throughout life.

Emotional Power of Music
Music has an incredible ability to help us connect with our true emotions. It gently opens the doors to our hearts, enabling us to express feelings, alleviate emotional suppression, and enhance our self-healing journey from trauma. This transformative power of music has led to the rise of music therapy as a trusted and effective treatment modality for improving emotional and physical well-being.

Music as Therapy
Registered music therapists utilize clinically certified musical interventions alongside psychological and counseling techniques to support our clients. We prioritize the development of meaningful relationships, creating a safe and trusting environment essential for effective therapy.
Throughout the therapeutic journey, our therapists help individuals enhance their emotional well-being and develop skills across various domains, including psychological, physical, social, cognitive, behavioral, and decision-making abilities.

Healing Through Sound
Numerous studies have confirmed that music can strengthen and reshape the brain’s neural networks. It helps users who experience language and expression difficulties due to illnesses (such as stroke or brain injuries) to enhance their speech abilities, attention, memory, and even motor skills, thereby speeding up their physical and mental recovery.

Universal Connection of Music
Music is a universal language that transcends boundaries, offering profound benefits tailored to our individual needs. It accompanies us through different stages and experiences in life, allowing us to find joy and gain the strength and courage to continue moving forward.

Executive Director
Kingman CHUNG

I believe in the transformative power of music and its ability to heal. This strong passion has led me to my journey of becoming a registered music therapist. Upon returning to Hong Kong in 2013, I have dedicated myself to promoting and expanding the reach of music therapy.
My aspiration has always been to harness the potential of music in more impactful ways.
The establishment of Music Flow, a non-profit organization, stems from my desire for more individuals to benefit from music, thereby promoting the accessibility of music therapy. We believe that each person carries within them a ‘music child’ – an innate sense of musicality that, when engaged through therapy, can evoke powerful emotional responses, promote self-expression, and unlock potential for self-actualization and creativity, while supporting physical and mental healing.
Every individual deserves respect, care, and compassion. We actively work to integrate resources and promote various projects to raise awareness of music therapy. Our mission includes providing services to vulnerable communities and terminally ill patients, using music to convey love and care, alleviate their grief and pain, and ensure that everyone is heard, and not left to suffer in silence.
Music Flow is also a collaborative platform that brings together music therapists, musicians, specialized therapists, patient organizations, as well as students from music and music therapy programs, and volunteers eager to participate in music services. Together we aim to bring different talents and perspectives into the community, fostering joy, inclusivity, and communal engagement through musical experiences.
As we move into an era of diverse treatment modalities, we advocate for a holistic approach to well-being, one that offers healing without the side effects associated with pharmaceuticals.
Music belongs to everyone – let us embrace it as a powerful remedy for healing both the body and spirit.

Jeanne CHIU
More about Jeanne
Jeanne began her musical journey at a young age, learning the violin and participating in many orchestra rehearsals and performances. Music has always been an integral part of her growth and development. As a form of non-verbal expression, music has the power to connect individuals and evoke shared emotions, possessing a unique and profound influence.
After graduation, Jeanne worked as a teacher, providing subject knowledge as well as assisting students in navigating various challenges during their developmental years. In her early teaching career, she faced numerous obstacles but was inspired by a senior mentor’s words, “Influence lives with your own life.” This motivated her to embrace her role as a companion in her students’ journey. During this time, she continuously contemplated other ways to touch hearts , which ultimately led her to resign from her teaching position to specialize in music therapy in Australia.
Upon obtaining her qualification as a Registered Music Therapist in Australia in 2007, Jeanne returned to Hong Kong, where she has spent many years providing music therapy in early development centers, special schools, and hospitals, supporting preschool children and hospitalized youth through music and language.

OUR PROJECT
Bringing Music Therapy to the Community
70 years ago in 1953, George Brock Chisholm, M.D., the first Director-General of the World Health Organization, famously stated that ‘Without mental health there can be no true physical health.’ This emphasizes the inseparable link between mental health and physical well-being. Unfortunately, mental health issues are often overlooked by the general public, leading to delays in seeking assistance and negatively affecting overall health.
Music Flow aims to lead the integration of music therapy into communities by organizing music therapy workshops in various neighborhoods. Conducted by Registered Music Therapists, these sessions will offer the public an opportunity to relax and engage in interactive experiences through music, enhancing their understanding of emotional health and learning how to incorporate music into daily life, manage stress, and face life’s challenges with a better mindset. Together, we aim to build a mentally health-friendly society.
OUR PROJECT
Connecting People Through Music
Music serves as a bridge for connecting people from diverse backgrounds, ages and social roles. We aim to create together a symphony that unites us where all voices harmonize and melodies resonate.
We actively promote Music Flow as an interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral platform for collaboration and communication. Our goal is to bring together music therapists, musicians, various health professionals, patient organizations, students from music and music therapy programs, and volunteers interested in participating in music services. By leveraging each other’s strengths, we aim to promote music in innovative, multifaceted ways within the community.
In addition to a variety of music experience workshops, Music Flow will also host online and live concerts. Through different interactions and exchanges, we hope to share the joy and happiness that music brings, fostering a shared vision of communal enjoyment, inclusivity, and connection.
